Ethanol fuel contains less BTU's of energy than pure gasoline. Some of the difference can be made by being less susceptible to preignition and increasing the compression, and/or timing.
Bottom line, octane rating side by side, alcohol in fuels decreases mpg.
WRT top fuel dragsters, they burn 10-20 gallons per quarter mile :)
My comment was based on that a gallon of ethanol will produce less work per gallon than pure gasoline. Work is defined as horsepower So a blanket statement is not necessarily true. The increase in horsepower may very well off set the additional fuel required.
I never said it would yield the same mpg.
