Hopefully you are happy with the new truck. I traded my beloved '07 Tundra for a Ram 2500 last year to tow my 7600lbs tt. I'm trading for a new Tundra again. The Ram has been nothing but problems and honestly the old Tundra towed my tt better.
Sorry to hear the Ram didn't work out for you. What specifically were the problems with the Ram? In what ways does the Tundra tow better?
You can't beat the reliability of the Tundra and that 5.7 v8 is one nice motor. They use an Aisin transmission as well. I wish toyota would put that power train in a 3/4 ton chassis. I just read an article about a fella who drove his 2007 Tundra 1 million miles and the only problem was he lost his reverse gear at some point. Probably an outlier but still pretty amazing. Toyota gave him a new truck free so they could study the wear patterns on his old one. Hopefully to make improvements rather than to more carefully plan obsolescence.
Since the 5.7l engine in the Tundra is very similar in power, I got the Ram with the 5.7hemi. It has the power too but the rear gearing and computer programming are not made to take advantage of it. The Tundras 4.30 is much better for towing than the Rams 3.73. The Ram computer always has it bogged down in the wrong gear, towing or not. For example it always wants to start out in 4th unless I come to a complete stop. I have to floor it to get it to downshift. It's very annoying.
The Tundra would cruise at 60mph and hold 5th no problem while towing, the Ram could only hold 4th gear and quite often 3rd. I could pull steep grades and even accelerate with the Tundra while on several occasions I couldn't get the Ram out of 1st because the gap to 2nd is too large.
My tt is 34' and 7600lbs loaded and the Tundra towed it great. We were a couple hundred pounds over payload but well under the axle and tire ratings. Not sure why you're having the problems you mention. I did upgrade to E range LT tires, added airbags ( for comfort, not necessity) and use a Hensley hitch.
