The ultimate system for the OP would be to go with a drop in LI unit. That may be cost effective from the point of cycle life. The greatest advantage is not needing to get to 100% state of charge for all cycles. The greatest disadvantage is that LI doesn't allow recharging below -20 C (-4 f).
