They definitely can. When the knock sensor went out on the SHO one of the symptoms was occasional heavy spark knock. Since the replacement no knock.
And, yes they will run fine on regular. However in the heat you do notice smoother operation with 89/91. The idle quality is better, shifts are firmer, and the "snappieness" of the throttle is better on 89/91. I've noticed that in the summer if I run 87 it seems to have the benefits of premium at an easier price. Once Fall/Winter comes regular is fine.
