GM used to do a 4500, which had gvwr's from IIR from 14500 to 19500, ie covered both the dot class 4 and 5 range. The 5500, went from 19500-26K gvwr. Meanwhile, the 6500, went from 19500 to 25500! Yep, the 5500 had a higher potential gvwr vs the 6500 due to spring/axel/tire options. Meanwhile the gcwr at one time was 26-33K for the 45/55 series rigs due mostly to the 6.6v8 diesel/8.1v8 gas option with the ZF manual or allison 1000 in the rigs up to 19500, the 2000 series allison, was in the 19501-26K gvwr trucks.
The 6500's, all had I6 diesels with more HP torque options, gcvw's upwards of 50K lbs with allison 2000 minimum, 3000 options, and spicer 5 and 6 sp manual options.
