What's all this talk about rear axle ratios? :)
Lower rear gear (higher ratio or bigger number as in 4.30 vs 3.55) only works for better pulling performance in farm tractors and heavy duty trucks, not rv.net tow vehicles where you only need HP and your eleventeen speed ottomatic...
"eleventeen speed ottomatic"....pretty good:B - NC_HaulerExplorerWOW...haven't seen this but more than quite a few times...a 2015 Ford F450 with more HP and more TQ almost beating the 2014 Ram 3500 with less HP and less TQ to the top of the mountain when the Ford driver of the Ram 3500, "let off" on the throttle so the Ford could pass it:R MOST UNimpressive..
Since they highlighted this strip of road that I've towed on so many times that I couldn't count them, I'm now REALLY looking forward to doing the same test with my old beat up 13' 3500 truck with the Cummins/Aisin and 4:10...course, I will only be towing 16,200# up the side of that mountain, but I'm going to see if I can hit the speed limit before I get to the top....the last 3 miles @ 7% can slow the truck down, but I've had no issues maintaining a 60 to 65 mph speed towing my 5er up that part of I64 through the New River Gorge area...Going down it, the EB and T/H on in cruise control keeps me between 55 and 60 mph without touching anything.....
Congrats to Ford for bringing out a 2015 F450 with more HP/TQ and the 4:30 gearing and beating a 2014' Ram 3500 with again, less HP/TQ and the 4:10 gearing....oh, and a Ford guy driving the Ram truck.....great propaganda for those who are blind to the obvious... - notevenExplorer IIIWhat's all this talk about rear axle ratios? :)

According to Ford, this transmission has been validated at 50,000 lbs for 500,000 miles. The PTO is rated for 50 HP continuous use and 250 lb ft maximum torque.
It's nice to see everyone stepping up. I wish there was GM product in the larger classes to keep everyone innovating. 45Ricochet wrote:

Or was that a different way of comparing these two light duty twucks!

Rick,
Glad you enjoyed the video...:W4x4ord wrote:
I think it makes total sense to compare the F450 to the 3500 Ram. If I am wanting a truck to tow 30,000 lbs this is what these two manufacturers recommend. The engines and transmissions are designed different that to say they need to have identical rear end ratios seems foolish to me. I actually tow 30,000 lbs quite regularly with my 2011 srw and it seams to handle the weight well enough for my expectations. I have heavier trucks that I could use but my personal preference is to use the pick up for lighter loads like that.
I agree... And also would like to add Chrysler's engineers specified the rear end ratio probably to match the power band of the cummins engine.- mrkojeExplorer

Ford sells more trucks than anyone else and has for a long time. Everybody and his brother-in-law understands that the F450 with more HP and torque would do better than the Ram 3500. This is stating the obvious. Was it really worth the money for Ford to put this commercial together?
McDonald's also sells more hamburgers but it doesn't make them the best does it.
Edit: Not saying or implying if Ram or even Chevy is better or the best. I just can't stand the argument that one particular brand is better than another because of volume alone. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIJust sat and watched. What would happen if the RAM had 4:30 gears? Letting off what a joke.
Same old C channel frame since 1999. Nice the guy called the Aisin a Commercial trans.
Big radiator and alternator, how about the dual alternators and radiators in the RAM.
Loved the 2 second clips showing the Ford flying past the RAM.
As some of the video comments said Ford should be embarrassed! - 45RicochetExplorer
