Had the exact truck you're looking at. Solo 10 mpg suburban traffic, 12-12.5 highway (solo). Pulling 30' high profile TT, 7000 lbs loaded, 7-7.5 mpg. You can go as easy on it as you want, your mpg will NOT be different. Even with that said, I strongly recommend you get the 3/4 ton. It will not be overkill. And you'll probably only do about 2mpg worse, which shouldn't be too much more annual $ for gas. Figure it out. You cannot go wrong with the 8.1 as long as you accept the mpg. Excellent motor.
