Recently completed 5100 miles towing to the Pacific Northwest that included Theodore Roosevelt NP, Glacier NP, Mt Ranier NP, Mt Hood, Columbia River Gorge, Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, Black Hills NF, and Badlands NP. My 2003 Burb with the 8.1L and 3.73 rear averaged 8.8mpg for the entire trip. My 34ft TT weighs 7800# with 1200# tongue wt measured with a Sureline scale. There was 3 adults, 4 kids and cargo at 1000#. I tried to keep the freshwater tank at 10gal while towing. I have 2 30# propane tanks and 2 group 24 batteries on the hitch. I'd say the Burb towed extremely well even thru the mountain passes with 5, 6, 8, and 10% grades. The 10% grades thru Teton Pass were exhilarating to say the least. There were 25mph curves mixed in going downhill. I'm thankful for heavy duty brakes and tranny to keep things uneventful. Of all the places I visited, I can't wait to see Glacier again! Many Glacier CG was awe inspiring. More Pics in my photobucket.
Sorry for the multiple posts, back to back, but I just had to log back on and say that a trip like you described above is EXACTLY why I'm looking at getting this vehicle. If I were just going local camping, I'd keep the Denali. But we bought this trailer so we'd have more room to do bigger trips. And I want to get them done here while my kids are still absolutely LOVING camping. No since in getting the bigger trailer if I'm not comfortable pulling it to the places I want to go!
Anyway, sorry for the reply again. Just really envious of that trip you just took. Sounds like a great time.
