Probably due in part to this thread about GM fudging payload ratings on trucks. The "curb weight" is always for a stripper model, and the mfr takes out as much as possible to get to that weight to make the yaload seem bigger than it is.
Consider that the 8.1 is 358 lbs heavier than the 6.0 (761 lbs vs. 403 lbs.) all by itself. Look at the list of gizmos that you get with the LT version vs the "base" model, and it's pretty easy to get to the 1000 lb difference.
