Today: Harvesting J-Molding/J-Trim/Rain gutter edge
I've been pulling summer collected projects back away from Lil' Queeny - in the shop. One at a time (or rather - working on several at once), every so often, I get one completed - one at a time.
And at the same time, I've been doing several little things on Queeny too, which will provide material for upcoming posts, in a few weeks. I've got that medical thing coming up, and there will be a little downtime, so I'm prepping "post material" to help me get through the boredom of just sitting around healing - know what I mean?
One of the last (of several) things to do is completing exterior moldings. But soft aluminum is not so common anymore I guess, because the prices are shooting through the roof! And when they take a 16' and cut it into 8' for shipping, there's so much waste (I need two 5' and two 4' lengths. That forces me to buy 4 sticks instead of just the three I could get by with. Because the people you speak to on the phone are order takers, not shipment packers (and cutters).
Well here...
Aluminum J-Mold
But as a special project, maybe Queeny was worth the expense? I started an order - just to find out it's out of stock, give them your email address, and when it's in stock they'll tell you. Must be a popular item (therefore the price, and the fact that it's never in stock).
I couldn't re-use what came off Queeny, even though I had already prepped it. Not enough pieces in needed lengths, without having odd screw holes, added by a PO.
And the Great Spirit of the Sky said, "I give you the mighty Ta-Ton-ka for your daily needs. Live simple lives, and work hard, and you will be satisfied with what your Mother provides".
I went out and uncovered the caches to take a look. Ta-Ton-ka had extra fat and gristle on his sinews.

The Skamper was a different animal, and had NOT the extra fat and gristle!

The sinews (J-Mold) of the Skamper came out easy. But it was worthless. Not aluminum, just thin painted metal.

The Great Spirit said I must work hard. I came back to the Buffalo cache.
My initial examination brought learning - learning that the Bison was not the same in all areas, that there are some parts easier to obtain...

And there are other parts which bring greater difficulty.

And some of the connecting tissues were larger and required bigger tools, such as the 5/16" instead of the normal 1/4".

And were buried deeper into the skeleton of Ta-Ton-Ka.

Such as ALMOST an inch and a half! Found at five places on each side of the animal, just behind the shoulder.

The Buffalo hide is strong, and the Great Spirit in the past had directed a PO to drape ceremonial skins over even the tough hide of Ta-Ton-Ka, telling the PO "Ta-Ton-Ka will not leak from his roof, unless you drag the under-story of the camping trees, then you shall create wide gashes and your ceremonial robes will be tattered!
And the descendants will have to do the work you refused, that of regular maintenance, and of changing out the Butyl.
I raised my eyes to the sky and I asked the Great Spirit for a sign - and He showed me my future, of an easier life to come.

Upon returning to my people, and to my shop, there was great rejoicing. (Rejoicing? That sounds so Monty Pythonish).
(To be continued some day in the Queeny threads).
