1994 Jayco Sportster Questions

I just purchased a 1994 Jayco Sportster 8ft., and it was "refurbished" a few owners previously.

My first question is simply about the water and drain outlets/inlets on the drivers side. what is what? the camper has had all marking removed. It appears I have a fresh water tank as well as a grey water tank. I have to trace down all the electrical, as it's been swapped to a 6 pin plug instead of the 4 pin plug the manual I found online states it should have. it also has had an AC unit added in place of the rear window next to the door.

unfortunately I don't have any pics yet, and all the pictures I've found online are far to away to tell what is what...

I assume there's a standard for inlet side vs outlet side, and I think I know which is which, but would prefer expert verification :)

thanks,
Mick

I need a proper door latch

  • I didn't address the sewer drains.

On a 96 model, if you have a toilet (yes, some only have a portapotty), you will have a grey water and a black water tank. Grey water is from the sink and shower (if you have a shower). Black water is from the toilet. I have seen a few post on this forum where some older campers only have one tank and few where someone had re-plumbed the pipes dumping grey water into the black. You may have to do a little investigation to figure your systems out. That's all part of the learning experience.

Words of wisdom given to me when I bought my first camper: Never, Never, Ever, use a broom stick to unstop a tank from outside the camper.

Good luck with the your new toy.
  • Noticed no one with a Jayco had replied, but most have similar plumbing. It could have been changed but, on a 96 model you should have a hose connection to connect to city water, a gravity feed inlet to put water into the tank for when there is no city water and then you should have 2 line drains, one for hot and one for cold. Last, you will have a tank drain.

The tank drain will exit below the tank (possibly through the floor) and depending on the camper, the line drains will exit through the wing extending over the bed of the truck or through the floor if the camper has a basement.

A lot of manufacturers will have online documentation for their campers that shows you where all the valves are. If you can't find a Jayco manual online, Arctic Fox puts theirs on line and it will give you an idea of where things are located.

    Hope this helps,
