1999 Chevy Silverado

I just purchased a 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500. I don't believe it has the tow package, but I was going to double check for a brake controller connection. What does it look like? I know it should be under the dash.
  • It is a separate box just to the left of brake pedal. Brake harness plugs in there
  • Thanks for the replies. Been delving into my owners manual and it appears that, even if in don't have the towing package, I can get the proper harnesses to hook everything up.

Found the brake controller under dash harness at Wal Mart tonight.
  • Most of that models trucks from about 89 on, have teh wires as std to the rear of the truck. YOu just have to put an actual harness on the rear to suit your needs.

Then an appropriate hitch etc. In 88 when that model truck came out, the trailer pkg included a hd radiator, and tranny oil cooler. after about 89 or 90, this too became a std item. So after this time, reality is, the ONLY part of the trailer two pkg you got when ordered, was the factory hitch! You should not have an issue overall getting yourself hooked up ready to go with a trailer in tow.

  • The owner's manual shows where the fuses are, but not the harnesses. Just says to see your dealer. I doubt I have it, but one can always hope!

I'll be towing a 19' hybrid. I have the WDH already. Just have to get a brake controller wired in before spring.
  • FWIW I towed a 24'TT from Washington state to Indiana via the southern route (down coast to I-10 and across) with an 86 silverado 1500. I had the brake controller and weight distribution hitch. About the third time a semi passed and I white-knuckled it for the next half mile, I stopped in Albuquerque for an anti-sway device. The rest of the trip was uneventful, but maybe I was just young and foolish.
  • What do you plan to tow with it?
As for a controller plug in? Look at the under dash fuse panel. If it is there on that vintage of a truck it will be on that panel. Check the owners manual and see if it shows one (doubtful).
