Kidding aside the cummins factory filter is hard to remove because the factory sprays a clear coat over the entire engine including the filter which makes it feel Conan the Barbarian installed it. After removing the factory filter your left with the limited space to contend with going forwards. I suspect you will find a after market filter relocation kit soon.
Yep, infamously known as the Cummins Gorilla. That aside, It isn't that much more of a pain to remove the intake pipe. I leave the airbox where it is and don't even open it. 2 8mm band clamps and 1 spring clamp and the intake hose is out of the way (about 5 minutes to remove the intake really. Then you have access to the filter and there's a good amount of space to actually fill the filter and get it mounted with no problems. It's really become a minor inconvenience compared to the first time I did this. It still takes me an hour to do the oil change, but that's because I change the oil hot and I let the engine drain for a while trying to get it as empty as possible. Really only 15 minutes of actual work there.
People have already mentioned having the pan in the air close to the drain hole to start things. However, I don't know if splashing in the pan is an issue for you. Since a Cummins dumps oil like a bull peeing on a flat rock, I had a splash problem. So I put down some air filter media on the top of my catch pan so the oil doesn't splash all over the place. No splashing incidents since then.
