Another idea is to buy a tongue weight scale. They sell them on amazon, they're not too expensive, but they're not cheap.for something you won't use very often. About $150.
What do you have for a tow vehicle? Look at the door frame on the drivers door. It will have a maximum payload rating. That is the max weight you can hold in the vehicle including all cargo and passengers, the tongue weight also counts as weight in the vehicle.
As for backing up... it's something that is very hard for some people, others pick it up quick. It does however take practice. Go to a large open parking lot to practice. Camping last weekend a family had come from Arizona to NY, and they were trying to back into a spot. They just kept backing up 3 feet, then giving up and pulling forward 6 feet. We helped and they got into their spot. Practice before you go out, it'll save a lot of hassle.
