You are not the only one who asks that question, lots of people want them to be equal, but they are not. GVWR takes into account a lot of factors including frames, brakes, etc. It would be fairly easy to throw a HD rear axle under a light duty pickup if that is all it took to get a big rating.
Actually, I have worked for Dodge 20+yrs, I have tried researching different part numbers between 3500 srw (10100 GVWR) compared to the 2500. The only difference I have found was the rear springs. Same front springs, brakes, axles, eng/trans, cooling and I think the frames were too. I considered adding the O.E. 3500 overload springs, but opted to just add the Timbrens. Of coarse I didn't realize my truck was overweight at that time.
