20 " tires

I see talk about 20" tires. the ram I am looking at comes with
LT285/60R20E OWL tires. are these as good for towing as 18"

both are E rated, but I do see a shorter sidewall
  • I have 20" tires on my Super Duty and really like them and they also make the truck look really good.

On a Ram truck I think the 20" tires look too big since the truck package is smaller so the tire look out of proportion.

Having said that the OD for a 20" and 18" tire I believe are ~ the same. The 20" tires have less side wall which makes the truck handle better and the rims are heavier due to more mass.
  • 20s are as good or better for towing than the smaller rims due to less sidewall flex (theoretically). But having 17s and now 20s same truck, same camper, very similar load ratings. Both 34" tires, I can say it doesn't matter.
Get the dubs if you like them!
  • thanks, was concerned about carry capacity. with a shorter sidewall, was worried about pothole damage. seem like either are going to work
  • 20" tires on current F350 and on previous F350 both towing 35' 5er. No problems at all. I like the 20" wheels appearance. But yes the tires are more expensive.
  • It really does come down to what you like or what you feel looks better. There are many options in the 20" size from Nitto to Toyo to Mickey Thompson...... If the ride is harder it's not by much, doubt you'll tell the difference. You can get the tire Ford uses on the Dodge stock wheel, 275/65/20, if you use an aftermarket wheel you'll need to put a simple leveling kit on the front.
  • our 2015 GMC 2500HD denali has 20" tires. So far my opinion is

    Advantages:
the wider profile shorter sidewall does seem to make the truck more response turning. less sidewall flex, less squirm
even though they are 60 series, the sidewall is still tall enough to not be an issue with damage from rocks, etc. Much different than my sedans with low profile tires in that respect

    Disadvantage
very limited tire choices today, however it seems like more and more tire companies are coming out with tires in the factory size.
I found NO studless winter tires available in either 18" or 20" sizes, need to go to a 17" rim to get a studless winter tire.
Studded winter tires are available in 18" but so far I have seen none in 20"

I usually buy a set of rims and mount studless winter tires and run them as needed in the winter months. Not sure what I will do this winter, not sure I want to find a set of 17" rims. would rather have some 18" rims.

On our denali, IMHO the std 20" rims were butt ugly, so we went with the 5 spoke forged aluminum 20" rims, which I liked better and also were a $400 credit over the std rims.
  • Big problem for me was the 20" rims are ugly. We bypassed all trucks that had them and found a Laramie with 18's, which are the best looking wheel in the line up. Cost of replacement was also in the back of my mind. Chris
  • Personally, I'm not a fan of short sidewall tires. Have them on our VW and though it doesn't ride bade, I think a taller sidewall would ride better.. Sorry, can't speak for truck tires w/ shorter sidewalls.
  • Not sure about that size, but for our Chevy there is still a limited tire choice in 20" E rated tires (265/60/20). Before buying, do some searching for replacements if there is a certain tire model or type you prefer to go with when the time comes.

As for towing, not sure I have noticed much of a difference at all, at least compared to our '10-1500 that had 18's.

The 20's do ride rougher on the roads here in Mi as the majority of them are ****!!!! On a nice, smooth roads hardly any difference though compared to the 1500 w/ C rated or even the stock tires.

I know the Rams do have a little room in the wheel well that allow more tires sizes to fit compared to our generation Chevy if you choose to change the tire size.
  • Some have reported here on the forum that the 20 inch tires are more expensive to replace versus comparable 18 inch sizes.

But load ratings for the 20's are similar if not heavier rated. Believe 3600 some odd pounds for the 20 inch size you are asking about.
