Usually a rod bearing or main bearing is an oiling failure of one sort or another. Could be many causes - oil pump drive, oil pump itself, the aforementioned intake manifold gaskets, or it could have just been time. I sometimes think the miracle is that these things run for 11 years and 125K miles and don't break, not the opposite.
