2002 excursion problem areas?

Going to look at a 2002 Excursion tomorrow. I have NO experience with Fords. I know some eject spark plugs. This one is a V-10, 140,000 miles 4x2 with towing package. I think it's a limited as well. Also, what is fair market value on this truck? Like I said, this is all new to be, I've driven Chevy all my life but just can't find a 3/4 ton suburban I like.
  • On the GMT800/900 8.6K GVWR Sub's...look for the F60 option...begets the 1 ton
front torsion bars as part of the snow plow prep package...and since
the rear axle is in the 1 ton range...kinda sorta a 1 ton Sub...why
    tongue'n cheek call mine a K3500... :)
  • My Excursion is a 2000 with the 7.3 Diesel. Will keep since there are no replacement SUV's that can take its place.

If GM only made a 2500 burb with a Duramax.

I do have a 2000 V-10 in my 3/4 ton truck. I had the plugs, coils, clutch, tires, heater core replaced when I bought it at 169,000 miles. Does close to 14 mpg solo highway at 75 mph.

Clean Excursion's are getting harder to find and they are getting old. I think the 2500 burb with the 8.1 rides better but even harder to find.
  • Have had mine for 13 years now. Tow a flatbed, car hauler, livestock trailer, hay wagons, boats and a camper with it. If you buy it check the spark plug torque tomake sure none are loose. Also check the exhaust manifold bolts. They are prone to snap off the heads of the bolts. At 140k they probably have been done. Aside from the above things I have only replaced the fuel pump and brake lines which were rusting probably due to beach driving.
  • I have a 2001 V10 with 3.73 gears that I tow a 8800lb GVWR camper with. I like dodge guy have done some minor suspension tweaks to get it where I want it. No complaints at all and I am coming up on 190,000 miles with mine.
  • I owned a 2000 Excursion for many years and pulled a 7500# TT and a 24' 9500# enclosed car trailer with it. I made absolutely no suspension mods to it, just made sure that the equalizing hitch was properly adjusted and the trailer and Excursion rode dead level. They are wonderful towing trucks and the last of the real HD SUVs made. Mine had a 7.3 PowerStroke engine. The only chronic problem I had with it was that it seemed to want to pop an alternator about once a year. I alternated buying a lifetime warranty alternator from Advance and then from CarQuest (now the same company) so that I could just swap the alternator if it failed while I was traveling and then turn it in for another one at the parts store. Also, don't experiment with slotted/drilled rotors. They were a bust and I found that OEM spec disks and pads worked better than any of the supposed "high performance" brakes. The drilled and slotted rotors actually fractured between the holes. The V10 is essentially the 5.4 with an extra pair of cylinders and they've proven to be pretty robust engines.

Mine had 185k on it when I sold it and it had a lot of life left in it. I think you'll be happy with it.

The V-10 Excursion is one of the best HD SUV's out there. They do need a bit of tweaking in the suspension to make them tow great! When dialed in it will be an excellent hauler. I routinely drive upwards of 10-14 hours a day without being worn out (well I am tired but not from driving).

The 02 was the year they switched to PI heads, they have more threads per hole to fix the spark plug issue.

Go to Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum and go to the Excursion section. There are a lot of people there that can answer your questions more in depth.

    Good luck.

X2. Of all the vehicles I've ever owned I miss the Excursion the most.
  • Our '04 X has a about 180,000 and pulled a 33 ft TT for 4 years and a 28 ft TT before that. I left it stock and it did fine.

If it runs good and comes with service records it should be fine.
