As others have said, the minimal advantage for non-towing driving is outweighed by the benefits of the big block: If you need a tow vehicle, don't give up a very good one for one that is less capable.
If this 03 had the 3.73 rear axle, the tow rating was only 7900 lbs. If 4.10, then it was 10k.
I personally think that a 60% improvement in fuel economy is a "huge" advantage to non-towing. I also know that maintenance goes up on 12 year old vehicles.
