Never had the 8.1 before but a have a friend that does. I have never driven his truck but have no issues keeping up with him when we travel. He has a TT and is not as heavy as my 5th wheel. He has an 02 GMC HD with the 8.1 and I have the truck in my sig. I will say one thing, the 6.0 and 6 speed makes a difference in towing. I really like this version verse the prior 02 model that I had. It was the 6.0 and 4 speed with the same 3:73 rear. Is the 6.0 like a diesel, no. Is it an awesome towing workhorse that is dead reliable and pulls my 10 k loaded up fiver without issues? Yep love it and will keep it along time.
