From what I remember the Chevy trucks with the big block had a higher tow rating than the trucks with a small block of any year. HP of these two engines were generally close, but the torque numbers is what set them apart. Perhaps GM disagree's with you as well?
Doesn't the GM 6L/6 speed/4.10 have similar if not better tow rating than the 8.1L/4.10? The 8.1L/4.10 was rated at 12k in the SUV and the 3.73 was down at or below 10k (around 9.6k?).
My 6L/6 speed/3.42 was rated at 9.2k. Pretty similar to the 8.1L/3.73 that had a gear advantage. My 6L would have had similar HP to the 8.1L and the 6L in the pickups with the 6 speed have more HP than the 8.1L.
Here is the tow ratings for the Burb 6.0L 4L80-E and 8.1L 4L85-E:

What is interesting to me is the HP/Tq ratings between the 8.1 and 6.0L of the same 2002 to 2006 generation.
Peak HP: 6.0L - 320 @ 5000rpm
8.1L - 340 @ 4200rpm
Peak TQ: 6.0L - 360 @ 4000rpm
8.1L - 455 @ 3200rpm
That 455 lb-ft @ 3200rpm sure beats the heck out of screaming up a hill at 4000rpm for 95 lb-ft less.
So what is the HP/TQ rating for your 6.0L/6speed? And at what RPM is the max torq?
