As the other poster said, ahhhh, where to start.
It's an engine. Currently have two with this. Have Duramax too.
Head studs are the common issue; easy fix, $5k max. Sounds like a lot I suppose, but if you were to buy a newer truck now, you'll spend at least that just 'cause it's newer.
I agree; I wouldn't buy one that was chipped. Stock, it's a good engine, fairly quiet (the new ones are even more quiet for sure, but it's a lot better than the 7.3's, and for sure, not as noisy as the older Dodge's).
Our Dura is ok, but they've never had the umph of the 6.0's and for sure are lighter trucks (I'm speaking commercially here...they're fine for RV's).
My work truck is constant at 30k pounds +, 140k miles.
Like anything, it's used. Do some reading (the forum's the folks are sending you too are great resources). I see from your post that you think there is a great wealth of info here, and there is, but you're going to have a hard time sorting through opinion's vs bad experience vs reality. For every bad story with a product, there is a thousand that didn't have an issue that you'll never hear about. All brands are that way. What you need to do is sort through the hype...and again, I'd focus on the specific forums (like where mechanics hang out, etc).
Me, I've owned all of them. We personally steered away from the 6.4's. The 7.3's were good, but they're getting to old..engine might be fine, but the whole truck is aged beyond what I want to deal with. The Duramax is decent but the trans they stick behind them aren't up to the towing weights we need. Ditto for the Dodge's (but I'm a fan of the basic Cummin's they run). The 6.7's have gained a good rep to date, but for our latest truck I didn't want to spend that much (for an RV...work is different).
For an RV, they'll all be fine (brands). I'd research the engine/tran combo's that are acceptable to you for risk and start looking while paying attention to your gut instinct with the seller.
Good luck
