Your question was "Why did Ford have 4 DIFFERENT diesel engines in the span of 8 years?" Answer, because they did. The same as Dodge/Ram and GM. Companies modify engines all of the time.
Ford and Navistar separated for a variety of reasons. For the record, not all Navistar engines have issues. Read up on Navistar/Ford to know all of the reasons. They disagreed on what was Navistar's issues and what was Ford. Ford apparently decided they'd be better off starting from scratch. I wasn't in their decision tree. I can expect it was a marketing decision or or a legal decision or both. Another factor is the requirements from EPA to go cleaner. Again, this doesn't directly relate to the 6.0.
