2008 Dodge 2500/3500 owners

I am contemplating getting one with the diesel. Are you satisfied with yours ? Any bad things with them and would you recommend them ?
  • I have an early 6.7L Cummins. Other than a couple of recalls it has been great. SIL just bought a 2008 3500 and is happy with it. Get a 3500 if you want to tow heavy.
  • Other than my turbo coming unglued, I'm happy with mine. Mileage is 10 to 12.5 towing 10,000.

Dealer said they would buy it outright for $33K.
  • If you are looking at that vintage, I would go back one more year and get an early 2007 with the 5.9L Cummins.
  • Hi there,

I have a 2008 2500 with the Cummins that I bought four years ago (take a look in the sticky at the top of the Tow Vehicles section for the thread on pictures of tow vehicles, I just posted two pics of it) with 118 000 km (73 000 miles). I did have some front end components replaced under warranty two years ago (I live at the end of a long, bumpy dirt road) and I had the emissions system cleaned out according to the interval specified in the manual at a dealership last year.

This generation was the first attempt at cleaning up diesel engines, and therefore it has filters on it that earlier versions don't have. Some people have had problems with the emissions system clogging up, which is often due to short trips. Mine is predominantly highway driven, and I've never had a problem with anything. The key is to give it a good run on the highway every now and then. Again, no problems here.

I'm very happy with mine, and I'll have it for a long time to come. I like the low end, low RPM smooth power of the Cummins, and I like the fact that a Cummins shop can service it as well. I just gave it a full wash and wax today, and it still looks pretty new to me. I have no regrets at all. Look for one that has a good body and see if the previous owner has regularly driven it on the highway, and kept up with emissions maintenance. I change my oil with synthetics twice a year and change the fuel filter each summer.

Sorry for the long response, but as you can see, I'm happy!

    Thanks!

    X2
Some had teething pains when the 6.7 came out. 5.9 was a rock solid engine in the mid 2000 era.
  • Not saying there is anything wrong with an 08, but if it were me I would also look either at an 06-07 5.9 (although might be a higher price) or go with a 2010+. The 4th generation cab is a big improvement.
  • I had a 2008 Ram 2500 with 6.7 Cummins. I traded it in about 4 months ago with a little over 110,000 miles. It was a very good truck for me. Only in the shop for regular maintenance. Good luck. Keith
  • My sons 2008, bad turbo, had to be replaced, was not cheap. Worst think about it it got terrible mileage. And of course the infamous front end issues.
