Looked at the truck in question, DIC shows 11.4 mpg. The guy bought it 3 mo ago and it has not had any thing in or behind it. He wants to sell it because he felt it got 10-11 mpg and could not afford to run it. It has no turner, no pollution equipment removed. The truck has about 145k. I get better mpg than that with my 5.3 gas with camper and pulling a small boat. I am used to new every 2 so driving a truck with 145 on the clock felt loose, and tired. In know I know they last 500k .... I know I can buy it really right, so I can afford to put some money in it. Can these be fixed or maybe some are just lemons. Could the odometer been tampered? Again looking for an HD for a trip to Alaska and back, then decide to keep it or not. I felt if I bought a diesel I could put another 15-20 on the clock and get my money back out of it without loosing anything. I could also run it a year or two and then decide if I want a newer one. Glove box suggests 1635 for a camper, I think it was 2600 total payload including passengers and gear. I know some say it does not matter with a diesel. Thats really not much better than my 1/2 ton rated at about 1900 .?
The DIC means nothing...if that includes any idle time you are getting 0 mpg and will effect your average. You need to reset and take for a drive.
Bottom line is with the TC on you will get 14-15 mpg...that is what just about everyone is getting with a Duramax. Without camper you can get as high as 22 mpg hwy.
These figures assume you don't drive like a nut and maintain reasonable speeds.
IMO; if you are not in it for the long haul, diesel makes less sense. I would not consider any vehicle an "investment".
Good luck, Bill
