2011 Cummins mpg change.

So here is some quick background.
This is my third year towing with this setup and I am pretty set in my ways when it comes to weight and speed. I try to keep most of my weight in the centre of the trailer, so I don't overload my truck. I don't carry water or waste. I'm in Canada so when I'm on our major highways (trans canada) I would be going about 96kph ( 60 mph). On arterial highways where speeds are 80 - 90kph I would maintain pretty close to the speed limit as these highways normally lead through smal towns and lots of slow traffic.
So over the past 3 years I would get anywhere between 11.1 - 12.1 imperial mpg, on my return trip, last half anyways ( 4 fill ups) my fuel economy improved, it's now 12.6 - 13.6 imperial mpg.
We have travelled this route regularly over the last three years, so I can go back in my mileage book and do an exact compare right to where I stop for fuel.
Anyone have any ideas? My truck has 67000km (41000 miles).

Thanks for your help.
  • My overall average mileage improved at roughly 30K ......towing heavy/working that tractor motor.
  • Your trailer will not overload that truck with water or waste. It may make it go over it's regulated max Class 2B GVWR rating, which de-rates the payload to fit in said truck class, but that weight will not even come close to overloading what the truck can handle or its axles ratings.

I would be happy getting either of those mpgs pulling that trailer.

Wind can really affect fuel mileage. A head wind reduces it and a tailwind increases it. So if you were driving into the wind on the way out and with the wind on the way back that could explain the differences.

This was my first thought, but there was very little wind on 2 of the three days we were towing, the final day was windy, but it was mostly cross wind as we were travelling the coastline. Even with that going on we still managed 13.1 mpg.

I agree and I am very happy with my fuel economy, it was just one of those WTH moments. I was wondering if there was something going on with the Diesel engine, like some little documented break in. ??
