Yes, a message comes up when you need to check it. I had mine checked(for free), and it tested OK.
The problem with buying the test kits,is that the strips have an expiration date and unless you put on a lot of miles, the strips will have expired before you get a chance to use them all.
I know some owners get together to buy a kit and divvy up the test strips.
