2011 Ram CTD 3500 fuel filter question

Does this year and model have the front and rear filters like the 2017s do?

Sorry, I don't know why I got 2018's in my head. No, you only have one filter on the engine.
  • They only have one filter under the hood. I believe the second filter was added to the models with DEF starting in 2013.

  • Yes, the 2018s have a primary (chassis) and secondary (engine) fuel filter/water seperator.

As far as the micron thing goes. Knowing the micron rating of the filter media is just half of the info. The rest of what you need to know is the efficiency at that micron. Generally the efficiency will increase as the micron size increases. You can have a filter that is advertised at 2 microns, but with a 98% efficiency. This means it will stop 98% of contaminants that are 2 microns. That same filter may have a 99% efficiency at 3 microns(stops 99% of contaminants that are 3 microns) and a 99.9% efficiency at 4 microns(stops 99.9% contaminants that are 4).

Some companies will advertise whatever micron their filter stops at 99% efficiency while others might advertise whatever micron is at 95% efficiency so be aware of these micron ratings and the efficiency at that rating as well.

Also, per Cummins the primary purpose of the chassis filter is NOT to filter out everything with a very low micron rating. The purpose of that filter is to filter out enough contaminates so the secondary engine filter will not get damaged and can filter out the rest. You can contact them and they will tell you exactly what micron rating and efficiency the filtration before the engine filter needs to be.
  • A second, 2~3 micron filter is an excellent addition and was stipulated by Bosch.
Glacier Diesel makes some very high quality kits to add it.
  • not stock, but there is a severe service option that adds an additional filter. Pretty rare as far as I know.
