2011 Tundra v8 5.7L, ready to tow?

Similar to this gold truck.

2011 Tundra v8 5.7L, 8ft bed, double cab. 10,100 max tow.

I'm considering buying this truck off of my brother. He is the original owner and that was the original window sticker. I'm looking to buy a new medium sized travel trailer to tour the states for a year following good weather.

Would I need to do anything further to this truck to make it tow capable?

The 5.7 Tundra will pull that trailer around like a little toy. You'll need a good WD hitch and brake controller to complete the setup.
  • Piece-o-cake. Have no worries.

Follow the common advice given (good wdh, break controller, make sure you're set up properly) hook up and enjoy.
  • Get a good WD hitch and brake controller. Hook up and go. You have everything you need in the tow package. The Tundra will handle that trailer with ease.
  • Ramen, just to be clear that 1645 is the MAXIMUM payload. Depending upon options, your actual payload will likely be lower.

As long as you keep your passenger weights and tongue weights under your payload number it should be a great truck to tow with. I see the 2011 has "trailer sway control" built in. I assume that means it has an integrated brake controller, but you might want to clarify that. If you don't have a brake controller, that and a weight distribution hitch are the only things you would need to add (besides gas every 220-240 miles...).

The Tundra pulls great and has plenty of power. The transmission and rear axle are stout as well. 10 mpg towing and a 26 gallon tank are the only drawbacks, besides typical low payload of a half ton truck.

You will have a great experience with the Tundra. I smile every time I drive mine!

1,645 lbs, I just added a new image (3rd photo) above with that info.

I do maintain that Tundra with basic maintenance like brakes, oil, etc so I know its history and usage pretty well. I don't really want to buy a brand new vehicle at this point so I figure its better to grab this vehicle than a used one elsewhere.
  • Those two are a great match. The Tundra is a very capable RV hauler.
  • That trailer will be a great match for the Tundra. Loaded with gear, you will still only be around 6,000 lbs. which is a good weight for the Tundra.

  • You haven't posted the critical number: payload capacity. That will limit what that truck can tow long before the max tow weight does. That 506 pound tongue weight is probably on the dry weight, when loaded it might be more like 750 pounds. Still you are most likely OK pulling that trailer.
  • Nope. Thats a great combination for that size trailer. Add a good weight distribution hitch and you are in business.
