2013 F350 getting new turbo today

For months now I've had an issue. When driving up a slight incline at lower RPM, sometimes the truck would shudder/hesitate and sometimes would be accompanied by a loud knocking noise.

After doing some research I found TSB 11-12-14 which perfectly described my issue. I took it to a local dealership a few months ago, explained the issue and the TSB to them and they claimed nothing was wrong and sent me on my way.

This weekend I decided to take it to the dealership where I bought it from (a family member manages it) and they took it for a test drive. They were nice enough to even hook up one of their trailers since the issue is easier to reproduce while towing.

Sure enough...

Squiggly line is not good, turbo is bad. Putting a new one in today. I'm leaving on Wednesday for a cross-country trip. Just in time.

Why didn't the first dealer test it like the 2nd dealer did?
At any rate, glad its fixed now for your long trip.

Because some dealers aren't with a chit especially when it comes to diesels. This is at least my experience with GM and assume Ford and Ram are pretty much the same.

Good you got someone to listen and accurately diagnose the problem. An increasing rarity these days in dealership repair facilities.
  • Some service departments are better than others. I had really good service where I bought my Ford since they were a large fleet vehicle seller. There are other places that try to tack on charges or learn how on your vehicle...

I'm still looking for a good Ram service center in the Puget Sound area for my new truck. I'm looking for quality over convenience.

Good question. I should have been more pushy.

  • That looks like a blow-off sticking or being slow to respond to me... But the graph certainly shows the surging pretty clearly! I guess it could also be the turbo itself not spinning consistently too.

Hopefully this fixes it! I haven't heard of too many of the new diesels having issues, but I'm glad you're getting it sorted out!
