2013 Subaru as Tow Vehicle

Last year I retired and purchased a 2013 Subaru 2.5i with the intention of car camping while looking for a travel trailer. The salesman at Auto Nations guaranteed me the I would be able to tow a travel trailer "no problem." While narrowing down my trailer selection to a fiberglass model, I learned that my Subaru does have tow limitations. For the past week I've read every online forum I could find with opinions regarding the Subaru as a tow vehicle. These opinions run the range of no way to yeah, great. Some of the information is too technical and some is so wordy that its becomes convoluted.

Does anyone have some straight forward advise or personal experience to share. I love my Subaru and so want to use it for a tow vehicle for a new 16' Scamp, 16' Casita, or 15' Escape.
  • OP Google CanAm RV in Canada and call them and talk to them. They have set similar vehicles up to tow small Travel Trailers with great success.

Here is a pic I like

However, these vehicles did require modification. The hitch on these vehicles are custom fabricated class 4 hitches.

You will get a lot of "no's" from this forum. Call CanAm if you want actual experience with what you are asking to do.

    Thanks!

  • ummmmmm

You were taken for a ride, there is no way the Subaru is going to tow that

I have a 2003 Forester and it is a great car, gone through several of the kids and when my daughter is done with it it is coming back to me with about 150K care free miles. because it is an automatic I am thinking of buying a newer manual to tow behind an rv when I retire. But that is having the Subaru towed

Your asking a great little runabout to do something it isn't made for. And all your going to do is ruin the drive train in the process. there MAY be a really lite weight popup trailer around a 1000 pounds that you may tow with the Sub. But if you do the first thing I would put on would be a combo transmission and engine oil cooler (if you have an auto)

I love Subaru's, they are great cars. No way can they tow what you want
  • My 2011 Outback 2.5i was a great little car. For what you're looking to tow,it would have been a miserable tow vehicle IMO.
