2013 Zinger ZT33BH First Impressions

Well, this weekend was the maiden voyage of our new TT, a 2013 Zinger ZT33BH.

Overall I am happy with the purchase, but we have one outstanding issue that needs to be solved, one issue I'm confused about, and one issue we dealt with in place.

The issue we dealt with was the pex fitting that was screwed on the the kitchen sink hot water tap was cross-threaded and leaked. It began leaking a couple hours after turning the water pump on. I'm a bit upset with Crossroads (the manufacturer) as that's a rookie mistake to make plus it should have been caught in a factory pressure test.

The issue I'm confused about is there were hundreds of little metal filings all over the floor. The unit was "thoughtfully detailed" by the dealership prior to us taking it, and they weren't there when we did our pre-delivery inspection and orientation, so I'm really not sure what they are or where they came from. They look like filings that occur from drilling through aluminum.

The last issue is the large slide in the main living area does not slide by motor power. It moves freely with manual override. I haven't investigated to see if it's a switch, poor ground, other wiring, or bad motor. It worked in my driveway at home to load the trailer and close it up for the trip, but did not work once we arrived at the CG. I have the dealer involved, as this will be a warranty issue regardless, so I'm not too concerned at the moment.

Besides those issues, the trailer worked fantastically for our family of five (Kids are 7, 4, and 5-months) and the kids all bunked together without issue. We were very concerned that the baby would keep the older two awake, or vice versa, but it worked out very well. The kid's sleep schedules are such that the older two are in bed a couple hours before the baby, so they're both sleeping by his bedtime, and he wakes up to eat before the girls get up for the day so he bunks with us from then on. Worked out nicely.

It also towed very well behind my 1986 Chevy 3/4 ton van. I was surprised by the towing performance of the old beast. Once up to speed on the highway I could barely feel the trailer in tow. I did notice it during starting and stopping, but it hauled very smooth and handled the road quite well. In fact, I had set four glasses in the outside kitchen and they didn't move an inch in transit (roughly 45km overall to the destination) which was very surprising.

Overall I'd rate the exterior quality as excellent, and the interior build quality as fair. They didn't use top of the line materials and construction for the cabinets and walls inside, but it is a lot of trailer for the price. It is a definite upgrade over my 1996 Mallard 31T, and I am overall happy about the purchase. I've suffered from buyer's remorse on some things in the past, but that is not the case for this TT.

Highlights:
Very large capacity tanks means more time between "dump runs"
Huge pantry with loads of storage
More counter space than we're used to in a TT
Lots of play space for the kids on not-so-nice days
For almost 10,000lbs it tows extremely easily

Lowlights:
Aforementioned issues
The shower isn't quite big enough for me, but is useable in a pinch
The water pressure isn't as high as I would like (anyone recommend a fix?)
The bathroom doorknob will hit a small child seated on the toilet if you're not careful

Question for other Zinger owners - the shower has a cool feature that you can shut the flow off at the shower head so you don't have to mess with the off and on knobs. But as it was off, the water turns FRIGID and drips on you; then when you turn it back on the water is completely cold for about 5 seconds. Is this normal? Is there a way to fix this?

My wife and I both noticed this. The outside shower seems not to have this problem though. As for the cause, beats me.

  • We have a new ZT33BH for this year, too. We took our maiden camping trip about a month ago. Found out that the furnace sends most of the warm air into the bunkhouse, then main living area, then the least into the master bedroom. Solved this by partially covering the bunkhouse vent. We noticed some finicky but easily fixed issues with ours as far as "finishing" touches - some trim wasn't all the way nailed down, some drawer catches weren't screwed in, and the door to the outside kitchen latches only by the 2 swivels - the locked latch in the middle isn't close enough to the bottom to latch - this will have to be a dealer trip, the rest we took care of. Love the floor space. Somewhat disconcerting to not be able to see out of the kitchen area into the "campfire" area because the slideout for the stove and fridge doesn't have a window in it, whereas when the sink is there, you can look out the window. The view from the other side of the camper, though, is excellent. Might have to find some type of cover for the skylight in the bedroom and bunkhouse - I like to sleep in when camping. We had some TV / antenna issues, but had forgotten the TV remote so everything was very difficult to do as far as finding channels, etc. - will try again next time. Moved everything from the old camper, plus some other things, and still couldn't fill up all the inside storage space - not even close! So cool to have that much storage. Found out that when it is raining, it drips off the edge of the awning right onto the steps, which means you get wet going in and out in the rain. Bummer of an engineering/design job there. Son drove, and said it pulled REALLY well - of course he was also bragging up his 2500HD Chevy Duramax. :D I think there was one other not-set-up-right-from-the-factory issue, but can't think of it. All in all, this is a VERY comfortable camper, and it has a feel of a camper that is more expensive than what this cost. This is a lot of camper for the money. We can screw in a few screws and throw a cover over a register and get wet walking in and out for the benefit of the price and storage space and design layout (love the bathroom entrance from bedroom and from living area; love the massive amounts of storage).
  • My guess is the metal chips came from the duct work with the heating or A/C units, they are usually pretty dirt when new.

If it took a couple hours for the pipe to start leaking then I can see that it would pass any checks at the factor or dealer, they are not testing one unit for hours.

I take it you do not camp with hook ups since you are using your pump and like the larger storage. That is great but I am ahook up person.

Glad everything else was good and good luck with the slide.
  • We almost went with this over the Eagle we ended up ordering and taking delivery of. It was a close battle but a few factors swayed us. Glad to hear the Crossroads is meeting your needs.
