2014 F450 has a LOWER TC rating than an F350???

OK, so what gives? A misprint? A drunk engineer at Ford forgot that the F450 is supposed to haul MORE than an F350?

I'm only window shopping right now, my truck has done me good for years, but when I came across Ford's published capacity ratings on the F350 and F450, I had to take a double-take.

GVW for both rigs is identicle, 14k, but the best 4x4 Crew Cab cargo rating for the F450 is 5880 vs 6680 on the same setup F350. And if you look at the 4x2 F350, its over 7k!

F450 @ 5880 vs. an F350 @ 7080???

2014 F350/450 Cargo Capacity and GVW

Towing is better, but only 10% better on the F450.

  • Look at cab chassis version of the F450 instead of the pickup bed version. You will find the higher capacity you expected. Ford has downgraded the pickup F450 for better ride comfort which has hurt payload.

And further... f450 pick ups are not the same as the cc models. Brakes. Pulling is one thing, but stopping is what matters.

F450/f550 cc units; tow more, stop better.
  • Keep in mind the F450 pickup is the same chassis as the 350, but with 4.30 gears and the wide trac front axle. The 450 also only comes in CrewCab/Diesel/4x4 configuration, whereas the 350 is all 3 cabs, 2 or 4 wheel drive, Gas or Diesel. The weight comparisons you have, are comparing the 450 CrewCab Diesel 4x4 (5880lbs capacity) to a 350 Gas Regular Cab 4x2(7080lbs capacity. Compare a 350 that is equipped the same as the 450, and the weights are very close.

  • Moreover the F450 is only available with the diesel. The F350 has both but getting the 6.2L gas engine increases your carrying capacity by nearly 1,000 lbs in the 14,000 GVW vehicles. The diesel is very heavy.
