2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi

Hi everyone. I was looking at a 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi with the Tow package and I was really surprised at the low payload capacity with the 7200# towing limit. Rather frustrating. Trying to find something that will fit in the garage comfortably.

Payload off door sticker: 1050#
Tow limit: 7200#, hitch weight at 720#.

This doesn't leave much room for a family of 4 towing a trailer even hybrid like the Jayco 18D (18ft) at roughly 4500# loaded. Hitch weight could be 500-600#'s.

  • To get to the 1659# payload you need to go with a two wheel drive Ram. Unlike the competition Ram rates a 1500 for towing boats, trailers and ATV's. For RV's they recommend a heavy duty truck. Right tool for the job and new for 2014 HD trucks the 2500 gets a heavy-duty rear link-coil suspension with an optional airbag the ride will be as nice as the 1500 trucks.

On edit: I for got to mention the HD trucks will also get the 6.4 Hemi rated at 410 horsepower and 429 pounds-feet of torque.
  • Here is another good one. Thought I would check out a 2013 RAM 1500 SLT Big Horn to confirm what the salesman stated as a 1760# payload capacity which seemed very high to me. Not sure where he got that number from but it only has 1166# of payload capacity per the door sticker (SLT with 3.55 gears - 8600# tow) For comparison, my 2007 Honda Odyssey EX-L has 1366#'s of payload capacity. Looks like the only real option in a RAM is the HD series.

Exactly! expecially with SUV's. payload is always the biggest issue for SUV's, not their tow capacity.

Can you make the garage bigger?
  • Did the rig you were looking at have the optional no cost 3:45 rearend or did it have the standard 3:09?
