4k rpm? :) I got mine over 5.5k rpm in 2nd gear towing up one of the steeper grades in the Canadian rockies. Right at about 67 mph IIRC.
Its the same speed my modified Cummins towed the same RV up that same hill the summer before.
The only difference is the gas truck was drinking more fuel and using higher RPM.
Both got to the top without a problem. The experience is not the same however. The gas engine does not tow like a diesel does. I knew that going in, and I have no problem with the performance.
Keep in mind that I bought my truck to use 365 days a year. It is not strictly used for towing. The towing performance of the gas engine is completely satisfactory for me, but a diesel will be better if the only category you score it in is "towing performance". I will never argue the contrary.
What you aren't thinking about is that when I judged what I needed in a new truck not getting the diesel engine and loosing some towing prowess was a compromise. A compromise that I completely thought through and have been satisfied with.
My RV is hitched to my truck and moving maybe 5 full days a year. Even on a 2 week trip, we tow one full day to the mountains, stay 2 weeks, tow another full day home. The other 12 days we use the truck for hauling mountain bikes, kayaks, back packs, firewood, kids, etc. I don't need a diesel for that, especially when it costs 10k more and the fuel is 25% more too. It didn't make sense for my situation.
