You have not had good luck with trucks. My F250 has had zero problems in 3.5 years and 49,000 miles. Granted only 9,000 were towing my 8,700 lb TT, but the last 2000 miles were traveling mountain passes all over Colorado and Utah(10 weeks in all) then down to Gold Canyon, AZ. My 5.4L engine coupled with the torque shift 5 speed has served me well up and down 6-14% grades. You don't need 8 gears to have a great tow vehicle. I rarely even have to brake doing down grades with the tow haul downshifting. It did have to go all the way down to 1st gear on one 12% Utah grade, so I almost did have to brake on that one. My transmission (to me) is amazing.
