2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Specs

I just test drove a 2014 GMC 1500. I am curious about the towing and payload capacity I am being quoted.

The truck is 4wd and has the 5.3 liter with the standard box and 3.42 axle ratio. The sticker inside the door says max payload of passengers and gear is 1500 pounds.

The dealer is telling me the payload is 1800 pounds with a tongue weight of 1200 pounds. This discrepancy concerns me. I don't want to be overloaded or near max capacity.

I cant find the tongue weight on the GMC web site. Has anyone else run across this information?
  • Payload is different for each truck, trust the door sticker, not the salesman.

Tongue weight is only restricted by available payload and reciever rating. Most manufacturers list the reciever rating at 10% of the trucks tow rating even though it may actually be higher. Should be stamped on the reciever itself.
  • Take the truck to scales and get it weighed. Subtract that from GVWR, minus additional passenger(s) weight, full gas tank weight, 3000-lb tool box full of extraneous essentials, 200-lb dog = cargo weigh capacity.:B
  • The payload of that truck is 1500, period, end of story.

GM placed the yellow sticker on the door frame. The dealer has NOTHING to do with the official GM specs, so believe the "official" GM sticker, NOT the lying salesman.
  • Inside of the driver's door, look for the "TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION" sticker. It will give the exact payload for the individual truck you are looking at, right to the pound. Takes all the guesswork out of it.

That is until the dealer adds more options....
  • Not to hi-jack the thread, but my F150 EcoBoost door reads 9600 lb towing capacity. I put on some load range E tires today and plan on over loadsprings to handle my 900 lb tongue weight. I only have the six bolt hubs and not the seven bolt. I won't tell the truck what's back there.

For my 2011 Sierra, it is found in the Owner's Manual. Mine says 1100 pounds max tongue weight capacity with WD hitch. Not sure of the 2014's. You should be able to find a pdf of the Owner's Manual on the web.

FWIW, my truck is set up like you describe. 5.3, 6-speed, 3.42, tow package option. My Tow Capacity is rated at 10,000 pounds, but my door sticker says the Carrying Capacity is (only) 1440 pounds. Since I'm carrying a fiberglass cap that probably weighs 200 pounds, once I add myself, wife, and WD hitch, there's not much left for tongue weight. :(

  • If you get the max tow package on the 2014 Sierra, it should be 3.73 gears with different shocks, and the gmc website does indeed show a higher payload.

But again, the yellow sticker will be the "official" answer.
  • Tire and Loading sticker are "as equipped" payloads. 1800 pounds is for a base trim/no option version of the same truck so a salesman may be correct about some truck available.

1500 pounds seems like of low for 2014 GM pickups. They lost weight and crew cabs have been in the 1600-1800 pound range for typically equipped. There was even a comparison article online that showed a loaded LTZ crew cab with just under 1600 pounds of payload.

    Anyway, follow this sticker:
