2014 Ram tow haul mode question

I was watching some of the videos on the fast lane trucks and when they were testing the 2014 Chevy, it was downshifting coming down the Ike pass to the point they were coasting at 5000 RPM.

Does anybody know if the 2014 Ram 1500 will downshift that much on it's own coming down a grade?

  • I can't stand using the TH with the EB when descending. I always turn it off as the tranny thinks it needs to shift down an extra gear if the speed increases a little. Sometimes it's not a problem if the speed goes up a little, but the tranny doesn't know that. Much easier to just use the select shift button on the column.
  • Heck my old 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan would downshift to a lower gear to prevent overspeed when in cruise control. Didn't even have a tow/haul mode.
  • I think all 1500's going forward come with an 8 speed now. Tow Haul will mean that the engine will be revved more so that it will have more power on tap. This means a little more fuel consumption, but less wear and tear on the driveline constantly hunting back and forth between gears. The trucks had these algorithms programmed into them for optimum performance and longevity. Chances are, the engine was braking hard and not really consuming much fuel at that point. It's providing a vacuum which is how gas engines provide engine braking. Don't sweat it.
  • He is asking about the 1500 which uses different transmissions than the Cummins and 6.4. Also, he doesn't specify whether he means the 65rfe or 8 spd ZF.

Cummins and 6.4 answers may not apply.
  • I went through the Smokey Mountains with tow/haul and the exhaust brake on. Never touched the brakes on the downgrades. 13,000 lbs.
  • The tow/haul feature works as well as the exhaust brake on the diesels. I pulled a 279RB TT to Ouray, CO with my 2014 6.4L RAM and I didn't have to touch the brake at all on the downgrades. The comparison was to a 2013 Ram Diesel.

  • Cool thanks. Being in Michigan I don't know that we will ever test that feature but at least I know what to expect.

  • Yes, with the cruise set, it will down shift to maintain speed. Even when coasting in gear, foot off brake and fuel, it will speed up to a point and then start slowing down and down shifting.
