Actually, it's exactly the opposite. The Duramax can only be had with 3.73s no matter the truck's cab or wheel configuration. The Fords are only available in 3.31 or 3.55 in a SRW truck. Ram is 3.42 in SRW.
Fords in recent years have throttle calibrations that are much less relaxed than GM's in my experience.
All GM Duramax trucks ship with 3.73 gears - no option for anything else. This has been the case for as long as they have been made.
Yesterday I was towing with my 2011 GM diesel and made a U-turn in one manuever. I thanked myself for getting the GM shortbed truck as with any other truck from GM, Ford, or Ram I would have been backing up in traffic and not able to have made the turn and not even tried to do so. The independent front suspension makes a big difference and with Ford I would be looking at the F-450 to get its front end if I was getting a truck with a solid front axle.
