Nice review. Just curious as to your MPG when empty?
10 mile commute to work I'm seeing about 13. Did take an empty 500 mile road trip up back roads though pushed it trying to make time and managed about 14.5. But the truck only had 750 miles at the time so still needs to loosen up some more.
Probably because he's not using tow/haul it will run longer with the converter unlocked. Mine locks up immediately when in T/H with my 5er in tow from 2nd gear on through 5th. I've yet to use 6th when towing, but I'm sure the same would apply.
Next time up in the mountains, I'll have to use tow/haul more to see how I like it. I've used it some and hadn't noticed it locked up the converter sooner.
Nice report. I know that the interior of my 2012 is light years ahead of my 03. Kind of surprised you didn't mention that as an upgrade?
Really don't think the interior is an upgrade, but more on par for the 2004.5. If it holds up as well as my old truck, I'll be happy.
Are you comparing the engine braking of the 6.4 vs the stock 5.9 CTD, or did you also add an exhaust brake?
The 5.9 has absolutely no engine braking until you add the exhaust brake. So the exhaust brake was the first mod I had done to the truck. The exhaust brake was so good, that despite hauling a 11,800# FW for over 40k miles including a trip out west and back, I still had over 50% pads at 140k miles. The 6.4 engine braking isn't much, but when they adjust the timing (or whatever), it makes a huge improvement. But still, I know I'll be lucky to get 100k out of the front pads.
