2015 RAM 3500 SRW Review

I posted on here earlier about getting a new TV, 2015 RAM 3500 Laramie SRW, 3.42 rear, 68FRE trans, with 5th wheel prep, air assist. Live in PA but ended up buying it in Minnesota. First trip finally with the RAM and the Fusion. My old TV was a 2005 Dodge RAM 3500 DRW with the 5.9L, 4.10 gears and the old 48RE trans.

I had 2000 miles on the truck before the trip and we just put another 2000 on it towing from PA to Livingston MT. We took the PA/Ohio/Indiana turnpike to 90, then 90 north to 94 and up thru Madison WI, MN, and thru North Dakota, then thru Billings MT and ended up at Livingston.
5'er is a 35' Fusion Touring, weighing in at roughly 13K loaded for this trip.

So here are my thoughts so far:
The GOOD:
1) This truck is great. It pulls the hills so much better then my old one even with the 3.42 gearing.
2) The Exhaust brake is awesome, not sure how I towed without one.
3) Some people have said that the new RAMS beds are higher and are causing clearance issues, none here. I have 6 3/4" clearance on the bed rails and the 5'er is just slightly nose high, and I mean just slightly. The level bubble is just off dead zero.
4) Mileage on the 2000 mile trip so far is 9.3 mpg.
5) Some people have said the SRW's feel unstable. Maybe with a bigger 5'er, but I can tell you from towing with the old 05 DRW, same 5'er, that I feel just as comfortable towing with this new RAM. We hit some good cross winds in North Dakota and it handled them as good as the old DRW. The truck just tows that much better (see #1 above)

The BAD:
1) Minor nit, I am using more DEF than expected. I know it is related to how much fuel and not miles. But I am only getting around 34 gallons per 1 gal of DEF. From what I read it should be around 50:1. But this really doesn't bother me too much.
2) THey really need to put a larger tank in these trucks. I get about 28-29 usable gallons with the stock tank. So not even 300 miles on a tank when towing. Luckily I moved my 50 gal RDS aux tank over.

Summary: If your trailer/5'er falls in the weight ratings of this truck, you can't go wrong. I know some on here are die hard DRW's, but in my case I am using the truck for more than just pulling the 5'er.

Here is a pic of the rig just east of Billings MT

  • Nice lookin' set up!

I'm ave around 1200-1300 miles per gallon of DEF. I guess realistically that would equate to 2 fill ups per year for me (capacity=5 gallons).

Is your truck a short or long bed? Ours is a short bed and I agree that the stock tank IMO is worthless when it comes time to tow. If you figure 10 mpg on ave, you have to stop every 200 miles and this leaves you w/ just a few gallons in tank before you call road service. Replaced stock tank w/ a Transferflow 50 gallon and feel much better about having extra fuel. No one has complained (yet), but I like to go at least 300-400 miles before needing fuel.
  • Nice truck!.......great combo.

I tow 14K with 07 3500 SRW 5.9L 48re 4:10 and aftermarket EB and have always had pleasant towing .......no white knuckle/Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
    Solid steady platform.
Any vehicle can be when matched with rig that is within capabilities (real world not mfg. magical world)

Mileage towing is 10.5-11.5 hand calculated but I use backroads and drive 62 mph.

Hopefully your tow mileage will increase over time as engine breaks in.
I know with my 5.9L mileage improved after 25,000

Was that two mileage hand calculated?
What speed do you tow at?
  • Thanks for the report... you confirm what I had hoped is a good fit with a SRW 3500. I'm eyeing a 5th wheel in the 13-14K (loaded up) range. A DRW is out of the question for me given what I need to use the truck for when not towing so I'm very encouraged by your report. That looks like a great setup you have going. It's amazing how far things have come in the last few years with these trucks (of any brand). Thanks again for the report.

What speed are you towing at? I will not like going from 12.5 with our 2001.5 down that low.

We got pretty good mileage driving it home empty. Chris
  • I thought my DEF gauge went down pretty fast on our 1400 mile trip home from the dealer. They filled it just before we left Greeley, Co. The first 1/4 dropped like a stone. Now at 1600 miles it is just a bit above 1/2. Put my pucks in the bed today and ordered a B&W RVK3270 manual slider and Hijacker picture frame.

  • Gotta love that rear air ride! Truck sits like that with 500# in the bed or 3,000#

You are towing within your weight limits that is why it tows well. Very nice!

Good report... I would keep an eye on the DEF consumption. If is returns to normal with no load your probably ok.

    Thanks Fish
Yea, I am guessing the first 2000 miles (no towing) used about 2 gal of DEF, which would be right around 50:1. I say guessing because after 2000 miles the DEF gauge read just under full. After putting the first 560 miles on this trip it was down to the red marks, putting 2.5 gals put it right back up just under full.

I am thinking that the use of DEF is not only related to fuel used, but also how it is burned. If I remember correctly the trucks system looks at the sensors to gauge the DEF use. So it could be the hills thru PA, ND, and MT caused it to use more then normal. But this is really just speculation on my part.
