Many Canadians love diesel 'cause of the better mileage and our much higher fuel prices. VW TDIs seem much more common up here (dunno about the future though!!).

Bet the EcoD's towing mileage was a big influence on the judges. The runner up was also a diesel, the GMC Canyon.
