For the 2-3 times a year to refill I have no issue with the DEF fill under the hood.
GM could have put it next to the fuel fill but then would be dealing with a similar scenario that some Powerstroke owners have dealt with putting DEF in their fuel tank. Dope! Yes, you can stop stupid...
As far as the DEF tank location I can see concern with those that do heavy offroading which is a pretty small number for HD owners. As far as aesthetics once you throw on a set of side steps is pretty tough to notice. If you crawl up under one of these trucks you will see there really aren't options for relocating the tank once GM decided to go to the larger 36gal fuel tank on the short bed trucks. I will happily take the larger fuel tank over moving the DEF tank back inside the frame rails if it means going back to a little ol 26gal fuel tank.
