I've even about given up on the 2500 vs 3500 srw argument on here.
I know and can appreciate the similarities and differences between the two. Just have to tune out the weight cops once in a while.....
I towed at WAY over the manufacturers rating with our 2001.5 RAM for years! As our trailer grew larger with the existing truck.
HOWEVER if you is buying a new truck and tow a 5th wheel why mess around with a 250/2500 labeled truck when for less than the cost of an air bag addition, one can buy a 350/3500 SRW.
We bought the 2015 3500 SRW in Sept 2015 and had a 29' 5th wheel at the time. In May 2016 we bought a 39'4" 16K new 5th wheel and it matches up with the 2015 RAM 3500 numbers spot on, and I do not have to tow for the next 10 tens WAY over the manufacturers ratings.
So my only dog in this fight is buying new why mess with a class 2 truck if you are going to tow a 5th wheel that puts the truck beyond the manufacturers specs.
