I find the 6-speed far stronger a 4 speed auto. I doubt the jump from 6-8 will be as dramatic but I'm curious what info others have.
I have a 2015 with 385/865 3:42 gears and Aisin 6 speed auto. No need for more gears in the tranny at over 25K combined weight towing. Now if you had a 68RFE a couple more lower gears might be might be a good idea, however changing the 68RFE to similar ratios that the Aisin has would solve the problem, as the Aisin has lower 1st and 2nd gear to get the load moving.
68RFE does however have a lower reverse ratio vs the Aisin.
