2017 Ram 2500 or 3500 CTD

Been thinking about that trading in my 2014 Chevy 2500 6.0l for a 2017 Ram 2500 CTD. The theoretical low payload is a concern since I will be going down from 2800 to about 2200. This truck will have no trouble towing our current trailer but a 5th wheel will definitely replace our current trailer in the future. Question is how heavy do Ram 2500 CTD owners tow? I don't have an issue with the 3500 except the yearly registration fee of 60 versus the current 30. (Going up if the governor gets his way). Hopefully this topic has not beaten to death somewhere else. Trying to do some research before upgrading or just keep what I have for a while longer.

IF you are going to get a 5th wheel just get the 3500 and be done with it

  • 10,000 lb is the realistic limit for a 2500 ctd? Huh? Maybe those are Canadian pounds, lol.
  • We tow a small fiver with a 2500 ctd, we are more than happy with it. However, 10,000 lb which is the maximum allowed on my class 5 is the realistic limit for the truck. If your future fifth wheel is much over that loaded definitely go with the 3500. Is the 30 bucks a year a deal breaker?
