- RoyJExplorerNormally, I always correct people on the "torque vs HP" argument - as it's hp that pulls you up grades, not torque.
However, this is one exception where the TORQUE of the Cummins allows it for the much higher tow rating. An important spec in tow rating is startability - ability to pull away from a steep grade.
Cummins / Aisin: 930 lb-ft x 3.75 (1st gear ratio) x 4.10 = 14,299 lb-ft rear axle torque. With 33" tire gives 10,400 lbs of tractive effort.
6.4 HEMI / 66RE: 429 lb-ft x 3.23 x 4.10 = 5,681 lb-ft axle torque. With 33" tire gives 4,132 lbs of tractive effort.
The gas engine has only 40% of the starting tractive effort of the Cummins!
This means even with a 15,600 lbs trailer (23,400 GVW), the 6.4 gets beat off the line by a Cummins / Aisin towing 30,320 lbs trailer (39,100 GVW).
Simple math tells us the HEMI can only start out on a 17.7% grade, while the Cummins can pull away from a 26.6% grade!
In real life, the Cummins would perform even better as its torque peak (1700rpm) is much closer to the converter stall than the HEMI (4000rpm). - jerem0621Explorer II

Me too! Hope it's not a generic morphed look of all three like the 1500's are. If so my 15 will be with me for years to come.
I didn’t like the 19 Ram 1500 at first. It’s kinda growing on me. The HD version will be interesting. I can’t wait to see it in a dually.
Thanks!

I've had a 2015 Ram 2500 with 6.7 Cummins and now have a 2016 Ram 2500 with 6.4 Hemi and 4.10.
I don't think the Hemi is sad. It's a great engine if it fits your specific needs. I will say the Cummins is much better towing heavy and I would still have it had it not been destroyed by flood.
The Hemi tows my 12,500 lb fiver great and I'm not going any bigger in future. I'm retired and put less than 10K miles on it a year so the diesel just didn't make $$$ sense for me.
Not everyone needs to tow more than 15K or puts enough miles on the truck for the diesel to make sense. For those folks, I think the 6.4 Hemi gasser with 4.10 does a good job. I'm happy with mine.
I was very satisfied with my 2014 6.4L Hemi/4.10 2500 4x4 towing 12k as well. I have always said the diesel will tow heavy loads better, but that's only one aspect of the truck. The other aspects I considered were cost, reliability, winter short distance commuting, towing frequency (how many days per year did I actually tow a trailer), cabin heat, maintenance costs, and a few others. For me, the Hemi made more sense. I would buy another in a heartbeat, and in fact, I'm anxiously awaiting the new HD Ram redesign. - kzspree320ExplorerI've had a 2015 Ram 2500 with 6.7 Cummins and now have a 2016 Ram 2500 with 6.4 Hemi and 4.10.

With the supper high diesel ratings they have, how do the gas motor ones rate?
About the half the trailer weight of the diesel models.
4.10 gears in both.
Gasser 15,600
Diesel/Aisin 30320.

That is so sad on so many levels!:h
I currently tow a 12,775# 5er with a 2001 Ram 2500 with 3.55!
Climbs hills well usually around 60 mph, no need for bags on the truck.
The suspension is stock 2001 2500 with Camper and tow packages and optional 254/75-16E tires.
The engine has RV275 injectors and a Dialbo Sport Power Puck I figure I have between 290 and 300 hp and and around 600 lb. of torque. still far from the HP numbers of the 6.4 Hemi. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIrhagfo's truck is stock from what I remember. Those second gen trucks have great carrying capacity.
These are SAE ratings not something they "CLAIM". Literally twice the towing with AISIN/CUMMINS VS Gasser. - Grit_dogNavigator
