2019 will mark the 30th anniversary since Cummins found its way under the hood of a previously slow selling Dodge Ram pickup truck, sparking, without any spark plugs, a trend that completely revolutionized the RV industry... leading to the proliferation of larger and heavier trailers and an entire new class called toy haulers, enabled in no small part by the increased capacity of the turbo diesel powered trucks used to haul them around.
1989 was the year this unrelenting trend began, which survived the '91 recession, the 2000 dot-bomb, 9/11/01, the 2005-8 fuel price spike, the 2008-11 mortgage backed global financial crisis, over a decade of war in the Middle East, and all the marketing storms spewing out of Dearborn.
Even more significantly, 2019 will also mark the 100th anniversary of Cummins as an engine company.
And, 2019 is the year that FCA is expected to introduce a revamped HD Ram.
I don't know about you, but I'm kind of curious how Cummins and FCA will leverage these notable milestones into the new 2019 product that descends from this two tier ancestral legacy.
In 1988 I drove the first Dodge Ram 5.9 cummins that was delivered to our area for the county fair for display and exposure to the farmers and ranchers who drove nothing but diesel trucks. The one thing I do recall was when you would shut down the engine the belt squeal pretty loud which I thought was pretty cool, but I have to say todays diesel trucks are a lot more fun to drive.
