You are buying a truck for what it can carry so if every pound saved adds to what it can haul then it does make sense if it doesn't cost too much. I don't put much wear on my hoods anyway.
I believe we will start seeing more and more use of aluminum in HD trucks, to save Payload! We always hear how the 10,000# Class 2 limit hits 250/2500's payload, well we are starting to see that issue with 350/3500 DRW trucks also (F450 also), the Class 3 max is 14,000#, as the construction of these trucks gets heaver the payload goes down, so they need to save weight some how.
