Yep. Definitely don't need it. But it's one of those things I never realized I wanted until I had it.
Before that I was all "Push to start, thats a dumb gimmick. Who needs that?"
Like heated seats, automatic headlights, and self dimming mirrors.
The problem with auto headlights is people don't turn them on when needed, like when it's RAINING. And it seems like most car makers can't see the need to tie the lights to the wipers. And GM's self dimming mirrors I just flat out don't like. And the new one don't turn off like the old one did. Guess I'll just have to see that it "falls off" - mooky_stinksExplorerMy wife's car has push button start and it also will let you open the door when you're within 3 feet of the car. Plus when you get out and walk away, it automatically locks. I never have to take the FOB out of my pocket. I didn't know what I was missing. Hope my next truck has those same features.
- 4x4ordExplorer IIII jump in my truck with the key fob in my hand and throw it in a cup holder in the front console. Then when I get to where I'm going I often leave the fob behind to make it handy for the the thief.
- mich800ExplorerI think some are just over thinking some of these things. Modern vehicles have used a coded transponder for theft deterrent for some time now. The keyed lock cylinder for ignition is just redundant and not necessary. Now a momentary switch to start is considered more complicated than a lock cylinder? What can be expensive is the communication between the vehicle and transponder. But that exists whether you have a shiny key or a handheld fob.

Yes I have replaced a few ignition switches. I just did my 73 blazer a few months ago. Less than $4.00 for the switch.
"FWIW, I see push to start as a solution looking for a problem"
When you own one report back. Never had to replace the keyed ignition? I had to on my 86 C20. LOVE the push button start, fob stays in pocket.
Lot's of things we "THINK" we won't like until we have them!
4 years and 64k on my push button start, so far so good.
How much will it cost when the push to start system fails?
I don't know and I don't care as I have a 7 year 100k ZERO deductible warranty. ;) - Cummins12V98Explorer III

I would agree that there are features that at first seem frivolous but end up rather nice to have. That for me would be a heated steering wheel. Thought it was a gimmick, but my wife's Buick had it and turned out I really liked it. Now I check that box on everything that I buy that has it as an option. That Buick also had a push button start. Could never get used to it (granted never used the car much) but was unable to get my head around the need for it. These new trucks apparently have it, certainly not a make or break feature for me and if I could delete it I would. Doubt that is an option however. I really don't see it as a feature that creates a lot of convenience. Same with the push button gear selection or turning of a dial on the dash to operate the auto tranny, don't see that as a benefit either.
I can see a push button start being really valuable for someone who does lots of stop/starts in a place where they sometimes leave their vehicle (like a delivery driver). Hit stop, hop out and your truck will still be there when you get back. Then jump back in and hit start. Police vehicles is another one. Ideally they could all be programmed to start from any officer's fob. Someone who has a button start will have to comment on personal use where it is helpful. I'm sure there are some cases.
Moving from levers to buttons for things like transfer cases and transmissions can free up floor, console or steering wheel space. It's also likely easier to produce globally since right-hand drive just means a different dash & wiring harness. - ksssExplorerI would agree that there are features that at first seem frivolous but end up rather nice to have.
